What is Culture ? | The word culture has many different meanings. For example, we sometimes say that people who know about art, music and literature are cultured. However, the word culture has different meaning for anthropologists (people who study humankind). To an anthropologists the word culture means all the ways in which a group of people act, dress, think and feel. People have to learn the cultural ways of their community; they are not something that the people in the group are born with.

The human brain weighs only about three pounds and looks like a mass of jelly. The volume of the brain is about three pints (in metric units about 500 cubic centimeters [cc]). This is because of pound of water has a volume of one pint, and the brain, like the rest of human body, contains a good deal of water. Yet there is a computer in that three-pound jelly-like mass. The computer in the human brain is more powerful and more complicated that any computer that scientists engineers have been able to build.

The Mind and The Brain | Our own minds as very real to us, and yet the mind does not seem to have a physical existence. That is, it cannot be located in space. What is the relationship between the mind and the body? Dualists (believers in two) believe that both the body and the mind exist. According to dualists, the body is made of matter and exists in time and space, and the mind is not made of matter and exists outside of the time and space. To the dualists, the body is like a machine that’s run according to the laws of physics and chemistry, but the mind is not controlled by these laws. (One philosopher called the mind “the ghost in the machine.”)

Some philosopher called materialistic say that only matter exists and that the mind is an illusion. One humorist summed up both these arguments by saying “No matter, No mind.”

Many philosophers and scientists have tried to decide where the mind is located in human body. Two Greek philosophers, Empedocles and Aristotle, said that it was in the heart. Another Greek, Hippocrates of Cos, said that is was in the brain. An early Doctor, Galen, thought the mind was located in the fluid inside the brain. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, a subject called phrenology was popular. According to Phrenology, different functions of the mind were located in different parts of the brain. Phrenology also believed that the bumps on a person’s head revealed things about the brain (and mind) of that person.

Cannibalism | Five hundred years ago, Europeans began to explore the rest of the world with their sailing ships. They discovered many lands and people, and the people that they discovered had many new customs. Because the Europeans knew only their own culture, most of them thought that these newly discovered peoples and their cultures and customs were disgusting or wrong. One of the customs that most shocked the Europeans was that of cannibalism or people eating other people.

There seem to be three kinds of cannibalism. There is the kind that happens when a group of people is isolated from other people and has no other source of food. One example was survivors of a plane crash high in the mountains who were not found for several weeks. It can also happen with people in a life raft at sea after a shipwreck. In these situations, as people die of starvation, their bodies are eaten by those who are still alive.
